Oakington Centralised Event - September 23rd 2001

Following a pleasant sunny morning drive across to Oakington the rain arrived just as I came within 5 minutes of the airfield and the day was to be interrupted by three sessions of fairly heavy rain which accompanied blustery conditions throughout.

Despite this, the 9 teams that turned up on the day were able to fly four heats with some good racing taking place.

Racing began at around 11:30 and Ross/Turner set the fastest time of the first round (as usual) - a 3:28.7 with Smith/Brown just a couple of seconds behind on 3:31.5. Third fastest in the first round were Fitzgerald/Thomason
with a 3:36.0.

In the second round it was Smith/Brown who took the lead with a 3:24.5 using their Mazniak Gear but no one else was able to improve to affect the placings. 

We couldn't remember the last time Ross/Turner were not in the lead in a centralised event but this was to continue into round 3 with Smith/Brown improving again with a 3:23.2 and Ross/Turner only managing a 3:39.1. Fry/Whorton put in a 3:33.0 to move into 3rd place in front of Fitzgerald/Thomason.

In the 4th round Ross/Turner finally managed to put in the sort of time we have grown to expect from them with a 3:20.0 thus taking first place. Smith/Brown were unable to improve any further but Fry/Whorton managed to knock another 3 seconds off their time putting in a 3:29.8 to secure their third place.

No-one was interested in flying a final so results were taken on the heat times and no final points awarded in the league tables.
