The weekend of the 2005 Nationals at Barkston started off well but the wind gradually built up over the weekend making it necessary to fly all semifinals as two up races.
Over all - times were fairly poor with no teams going inside 3:20 - although Smith/Brown were credited with a 3:13.8 in the first round of semis - clearly an error when they took 6 seconds extra at the start and took a tank to warm up. Unofficial time keepers reckon'd it was around 3:23 so a faulty watch was suspected. It did not affect any results as it happened so there was no problem.
Langworth/Broadhead and Smith/Brown progressed through the event as the two favourites - qualifying for the first two places in the final
Dave Brewin paired up with Gordon Yeldham for the first time and put in a good 3:24.9 in the first round followed by a 3:34.4 to qualify for the final in third slot
Fry/Whorton were 0.4 seconds away from a final place in the first round of semis and then repeated their time of 3:34.8 exactly in the second round to stay in 4th place with Fitzgerald/Thomason in 5th place on 3:36.3
The final was a disaster with Smith/Brown getting DQ'd (over exuberance !) and, in a rerun, Langworth/Broadhead cruised home in 6:54.2 - a minute ahead of Brewin/Yeldham on 7:54.9
