Barkston Festival of Flight F2C Event - July 15th 2001

Good weather greeted the flyers on arrival at Barkston.

It was the first time the competitors had been allowed back on site after the foot and mouth problems and precautions were still in place with cars having to go through disinfectant troughs and all personnel having to dip their shoes in a tray.

F2C had 11 teams flew in the competition with one other practicing but having problems with fuel shut-off.

The weather allowed races to be held as three ups - a change recently - and thus several qualifying times were recorded.

It was yet again the team of Ross/Turner who set the pace with a 3:21.5 in the very first heat. Ascher/Ascher were still over from the USA and put in a 3:30.1 with Langworth/Campbell just edging them back into 3rd place with a 3:28.2. A new F2C pairing - McPeake/Robinson turned up with a complete Czechoslovakian Prophi model setup and put in a 3:51.1 in their first race. Sharp north found themselves struggling in three up races and clearly need more practice here.

In round 2 Ross/Turner put in a superb performance recording a new British record time of 3:11.9, Langworth/Campbell put in a good 3:21.7 with Heaton/Broadhead just 0.2 seconds behind on 3:21.9. Fitzgerald/Thomas put in a respectable 3:27.1 with no other teams managing to impact in the placings.

In round 3 McPeake/Robinson knocked a further 15 seconds off there best ever time recording 3:35.6 with a lightish engine run and clearly more room for improvement. Fitzgerald/Thomason improved to 3:26.5 (a couple of decent times for them) and Ross/Turner put is a backup time of 3:18.6 so - yet again - the three times from our top team were better than anyone else on the day.

The three top teams elected not to fly a final so the next three had the chance to compete over 200 laps. Trouble hit after 10 laps due to aggressive flying - The teams were instructed to cut the motors for safety reasons but it was too late for Ascher/Ascher who hit the tarmac a bit hard and were disqualified. In the two up rerun McPeake/Robinson ran in on 74 laps and Fitzgerald/Thomason retired on 121 rather than carrying on alone.

Prizes of Hobby and Household goods were given out by CD for the Day - Dave Rudd
