Barkston F2C Centralised Event - June 11th 2000

The Barkston Centralised Meeting was held on Sunday June 11th on a day that turned out to be rather cool and with a blustery wind. The site was shared with Free Flight and Pylon Racing which is a definite move in the right direction – more multi-discipline events are needed. 11 team race pairs turned up but only 10 entered the F2C event as Hill/Metcalfe just used the day to try out equipment.

The first round saw Ross/Turner take the lead yet again with a good 3:17.5 – no one else managed to break 3:30 with Langworth/Campbell being in second place on 3:35.

The second round saw a few improvements – noticeably those of Heaton/Broadhead who put in a 3:28.2 and then Fitzgerald/Thomason who put in a 3:27.4. Ross/Turner suffered an overheating motor withdrawing at 79 laps and Fry/Whorton were disqualified for taking off under the landing model of Walker/Peart (causing a landing error)

In the third round Langworth/Campbell put in a 3:25.7 to oust Fitzgerald/Thomason from 2nd spot and Ross/Turner put in a good backup time of 3:22.1. Fitzgerald/Thomason put in a 3:28.8 and Fry/Whorton managed to put in a rather slow 3 stop time of 3:49.0 having typical temperature problems with the Mazniak gear they were racing.

The fourth round saw Heaton/Broadhead improve their time with a 3:25.8 thus ousting Fitzgerald/Thomason from the top three places even though they themselves managed to improve by 0.2 secs with a 3:27.2.

So the final was between Ross/Turner, Langworth/Campbell and Heaton/Broadhead and all three got cleanly away at the start with all models pitting within a lap of each other at the first 2 stops. Langworth/Campbell then suffered overheating problems and a compression change was needed at the 3rd stop with Brian/Turner using his water bottle due to similar problems. As the race progressed to its end both Ross/Turner and Langworth/Campbell had overheating problems with Heaton/Broadhead having a good setting but with poor restarts. Even so it was a surprise when Ross/Turner managed to take it by a couple of seconds with 6:58.2 against Heaton/Broadhead’s 7:00.5. (Langworth/Campbell having withdrawn at 160 laps and settled for 3rd spot)

Dave Rudd yet again did the CD job and supplied tools and hobby goods as prizes together with World Champs T-shirts and Sweatshirts.

If anyone is interested there are still some souvenir shirts available from Dave Rudd – he can be contacted via telephone number 020 8890 6194
