The F2C Team Qualification Situation During the 2001 Season
16 British Team Racing Pairs flew in 12 Events that counted towards Team Qualification during the 2001 season and of these 16 there were 9 pairs who put in the necessary 8 times in 3-up races. 8 of these had a sub 4 minute average, 6 sub 3:40 and 4 sub 3:30.
Ross/Turner again led the way once the first couple of competitions had been flown and they finished with a tremendous average of 3:15.7 - their slowest qualifying time being a 3:18.1.
The two pairs of Langworth/Campbell and Heaton/Broadhead were competing for the 2nd and 3rd places throughout the season and it was Langworth/Campbell who came out on top mainly because their slowest counting time was better - Heaton/Broadhead had the better "quick" times but needed to fly more competitions so as to lose the slower counting times.
Smith Brown cam with a good late run towards the end of the season counting 7 times from the last four events they flew in and pipped Fitzgerald/Thomason for 4th place - The latter team having a set of very consistent times but nothing really quick this year. Smith/Brown's fastest was a 3:21.1 and Fitzgerald/Thomason's a 3:24.7.
In 6th place were Fry/Whorton who also left it a bit late and ended up counting all 6 times from the last three events they flew in. Another event could have made a big difference to their average as they were still counting times in excess of 3:40.
So, at the end of the season, the recommendation was for the technical committee to consider the F2C team for the 2002 World Championships in Sebnitz to be :-

LANGWORTH/CAMPBELL
HEATON/BROADHEAD
With reserves :-
SMITH/BROWN
FITZGERALD/THOMASON
FRY/WHORTON
At the time of writing this it was understood that some of the top teams may not wish to fly in next years championships so this team selection was far from final.
